In a meeting with Groups organizers where violence, societies elections and students associations were discussed
Dean of Students Affairs, Dr. Abdul Raheem Thyab said that security members’ presence near the Admission and Registration Hall is based on KU President’s wish after fights took place since the beginning of the registration period for new students. This statement was given during his meeting with Assistant Dean for Students Affairs, Dr. Ali Al-Nami and Groups organizers in which they discussed different students issues, especially students violence, scientific committees elections and students associations.
Thyab indicated that the Students Deanship role is executive. When fights take place it is the responsibility of the Department of Security and Safety. The role of the Deanship is restricted to refer complaints to Complaints and Cases Section once they are received. Then decisions are implemented on them or they are referred to the Students University Order Committee headed by Dean of College of Law. Cooperation and responsibility spirits required from students Groups. There is no need for their presence at the admission and registration hall, except for the only legitimate representative of students; Students Union. Specified number of Students Union members are allowed to enter the hall as they hold special IDs, where their names and photos are set. No Student Group including the Students Union is given the new students’ numbers because they are private.
Thyab stated that the Deanship will refer KU President proposal to form a Student Advisory Counsel including Students Groups organizers and Students Union headed by KU President, in addition to membership of Dean of Students Affairs and Dean of Admission and Registration. The purpose of this counsel is to establish freedom and democracy concept by involving students in the decision making process. This can be done by listening to their suggestions and implementing the best of those decisions, which will contribute to develop the academic process. Thyab highlighted the importance of teamwork and denounced disagreements, especially that parties on the country’s level are not organized officially. Nevertheless, we at the university respect students and deal with them individually and not as a group. Thus making sure that competition at the university remains fair. Assistant Dean for Students Affairs, Dr. Ali Al-Nami said that all submitted complaints will be studied for the first time during the summer. This is considered as an advantage to the Deanship because it has always demanded this. Dr. Al-Nami praised students movement and democracy in the university. He also stressed the importance to abide by the regulations according to law stipulations. For example, the period of elections shall be done within thirty days from the beginning of the semester. Regarding demands by some students to postpone the elections to the second semester, Dr. Ali Al-Nami said that this needs a comprehensive study as well as full measures since the issue is related to the fiscal year and to the budget.
Dr. Al-Nami, stressed the importance of avoiding committing penalties and getting academic warnings because this prevents a student from getting Certificate of Good Conduct from the university. Subsequently this will affect his career future and even his academic future in case he wanted to get a master degree. It is worth mentioning that this meeting was held by an invitation from Assistant Dean of Students Affairs to the Students Groups organizers as well as Ahmad Al-Melem organizer of the Independent Group, Jaber Ashkanani, Organizer of Democratic Group and Hussein Al-Khader, Organizer of the Islamic Group. Dean of Students Affairs, Dr. Abdul Raheem Thyab highlighted the importance to meet once again at the end of this month to discuss suggestions submitted by Students Groups organizers, which will be of a great concern to the Deanship of Students Affairs.
